CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: TURF LAW CONFERENCE 2026
SUB-THEMES
The following sub-themes, among others, shall be covered:
a) Human migration and the law in Africa
b) Human migration and exploitative cheap labour
c) South Africa as a socio-economic destination for migrant labourers in a capitalist economy
d) Illegal immigration and state capacity
e) Statehood, nationhood and statelessness
f) Illegal immigration and illegal settlement on town-planning and spatial development
g) Human migration and Africa's socio-economic development
h) International law on human migration
i) South Africa's law and human migration
j) Asylum seeking and refugee status
k) The nature and context of an economic migrant
l) State capacity, Batho Pele and management of migration
m) Human migration, democracy, elections and the people
n) The law on illegal immigrants
o) Human rights adjudication and public participation on migration issues
p) Humanitarian action in the face of man-made political humanitarian crises
q) Judging and politics amidst illegal immigration in a transformative society
r) Policing and crime prevention strategies in South Africa
SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS GUIDELINES
a) Abstracts must be no more than 300 words.
b) Please ensure that your abstract resonates with the theme or any of the sub-themes of the
conference.
c) For ease of the selection process, your abstracts must specify the speciality within which it is
located.
d) No speaker will be permitted to submit more than one abstract. However, the speaker may
present a second abstract if it is co-authored.
e) Authors are encouraged to develop their papers for consideration for the special issue on
immigration law in the Turf Law Journal. Turf Law Journal is a DHET-accredited journal that
strictly applies a double-blind peer review process.
SUBMISSION DETAILS
Abstracts should be sent to turflawconf@ul.ac.za no later than 30 August 2026. Notice of
acceptance, the conference venue and other logistics will be communicated in due course after
receipt of the abstracts.
